What the main documents do
Customs lists invoices, packing lists, transport documents, freight and insurance details, contracts and price lists. Other permits, approvals or origin documents may be required depending on the cargo and declaration.
- Invoice: transaction details such as products, quantities and prices.
- Packing list: contents of each carton and packing details.
- B/L, sea waybill and AWB: documents for the chosen transport mode.
Include cargo and handling requirements in a quote request
Distinguish product dimensions from packed carton dimensions. Supply weight, volume, carton count, collection and delivery points and timing. Costs and transit times depend on route, season and handling requirements.
When classification or handling is unclear
Do not assign a tariff code without knowing the material and use; consult customs advance rulings where needed. Check batteries, liquids and food-contact items before shipment rather than treating them automatically as general goods.
