Japan ecommerce and the operations behind a sale.

Reading market size

METI's 2024 survey reports Japan B2C ecommerce of JPY 26.1 trillion, up 5.1%. The ecommerce ratio for physical goods was 9.8%. The total includes services and digital products, so it has a different scope from that ratio.

A household-goods perspective

The survey values household goods, furniture and interiors at JPY 2.5616 trillion. This is category-wide data, not Ryuso turnover or a product forecast. Selection still requires a closer look at use cases and competition.

Plan beyond the sale

MLIT reports 5.03147 billion parcels in FY2024; this is not an ecommerce-only measure. We emphasise planning receiving, dispatch and returns alongside sales preparation.

Frequently asked questions

Does a large market guarantee sales?

Public statistics cannot establish demand for an individual product. Research use, price, competition and supply conditions, then plan a small test.

Which year do the figures cover?

Ecommerce covers calendar 2024 and parcels cover FY2024. Both sources were published in August 2025. They are shown as a reference year, not as the latest annual figures.
